How to Create a Canada CV: Canadian Résumé Format, Examples and Samples

Applying for jobs in Canada? Your CV should help an employer quickly understand the role you can do, the skills you bring and the results you have achieved. A long biography or a colourful template cannot replace that evidence. For most non-academic applications, prepare a targeted Canadian-style résumé, usually one or two pages. A detailed academic CV serves a different purpose. Canada does not have one government-approved template that every applicant must use.

This guide explains how to organise your document, adapt overseas experience and create a version for each vacancy. It includes original samples you can adapt and a walkthrough of the CaféGist CV Builder.

Canada CV format at a glance

Question Practical answer
What document should I prepare? A targeted résumé for most jobs; an academic CV when requested.
How long should it be? Aim for one page when starting out; use a second page for relevant experience. Follow specific application instructions.
What comes first? Name and contact details, then a role-focused summary or relevant qualifications.
Which order works well? Most recent experience first, with clear dates.
Should I include a photograph? Normally, no.
Do I need references on it? Normally, no; prepare a separate reference list if requested.
Which file should I submit? The format specified by the employer. Keep an editable master copy.

Canada’s Job Bank recommends a concise résumé, generally no longer than two pages, without a photograph or an unsolicited reference list. These are general conventions, not a substitute for an employer’s instructions.
